Depredador Artico: Part Two

August 15, 2025

“Hi, Kathleen nice to meet you, I need to talk with you, because I have New info about Edward when he was live in Nicaragua.”

This email message came to me just days after Ed Horne was buried in Guatemala. This source I’ll call Eva knew Ed Horne well in Nicaragua.

Eva was devastated when she heard the news out of Guatemala, and then through my Instagram account that Ed Horne was Depredador artico – that he’d gone to jail for sexually abusing boys in Canada. She had known him as “responsible”, and “friendly.”

In a phone call last night, Eva told me Horne adopted a 13-year old boy in Nicaragua in 2008. Horne also led English-language classes for children in his home from 2008-2016. She knows this because the adopted boy, now a 31-year old man, was and still is good friends with her husband. Back in 2008, Ed Horne liked to take photographs of the boy, and her husband as well. Horne told her and her husband that the boy he adopted reminded him of his son in Canada who died.

Ed Horne and his adopted son, whom the source now believes Horne sexually abused, lived in the Rio San Juan region of Nicaragua. This area is known for having higher poverty rates compared to urban areas. I am expecting to learn more about Ed Horne’s time in Nicaragua in the coming days.

I must admit, when I saw the email from Nicaragua, I thought: Finally. I had wondered if anyone from Nicaragua would ever reach out to me once Arctic Predator was published.

I have never been a social justice warrior. And I was never particularly interested in being a true crime writer. But there were a few things I knew while I was writing Arctic Predator: Horne was most likely abusing children in the countries he travelled to and lived in. Horne was always going to find the most vulnerable children, especially boys. He would always find places where no one would or could report his behaviour- places where poverty and isolation would protect him.
